Second life

Second life was launched in 2003 and is a multimedia platform that allows people to enter virtual worlds with their own avatar that they create as well as interact with other users and their content. The designer is Philip Rosedale who founded Linden Lab and reached his dream of creating an internet connect virtual world. After leaving his company he has returned and even mentioned to the public that "No one has come close to building a virtual world like Second Life" due to its positive and enriching experience he gives to people with rooms for millions more to join. His work falls under what we call today the metaverse, he explored digital identities, virtual real estate, economics and ecosystems all virtually. Currently about 40,000 users still play Second Life. Second Life is said to have failed due to its high learning curve and copyright infringements as well as unrealistic expectations. Since the pandemic it has been seen to make a comeback as the original virtual world game.

If you go to their website they start by saying "A new world is waiting", you can join for free and it says there is endless things to explore while also finding your community with self expression. There is a marketplace where you can shop items like fashion, home decor and more. They even market for remote meetings and say that companies and educators have used Second Life for social space events and remote meetings.

This to me seems very similar to the movie Ready Player 1 that we are watching in class. There is a marketplace, all different types of worlds and experiences you can go through. They also have communities that people can become friends and play together.

First Class and About Me

I am a senior at UT and very excited to takes this class. My hometown is Syracuse NY and I am an allied health major with a minor in marketing. I have interest in the medical field. My hobbies include watching movies with friends and shopping/thrifting. I love fashion and making crafty things. I chose this class because I think science fiction is so interesting, personally I love watching movies and shows that make me feel like I am in a different place or part of the show. I also am interested in artificial intelligence and how our future can change so drastically everyday from it. I really enjoy watching movies but I do not love writing, I am more of a math and science person who enjoys learning visually. I expect to challenge my mind during this course and push myself to think in new creative ways. I do think many movies show how our future can end up and what our technology is evolving towards.

Love, Death + Robots

My favorite short from Love, Death + Robots was Three Robots: Exit Strategies. This short film was produced by Blow Studio based in Spain, sci-fi writer John Scalzi created both the original and the sequel of “Three Robots”. This short story was to send a message while adding a sense of humor. This story is a great depiction of what the future might hold as far as humans being the ultimate threat to themselves. I enjoyed this film the most because it shows how futuristic the technology could be with robots but also how terrible the future could be if humans do not start changing their ways. The robots have become smarter than humans and even mock them as their creators. The whole film these three robots walk around a post-apocalypse world and digest what they are seeing how at fault humans are.  While trying to figure out how to survive in this world the robots discover human remains of a “survivalist camp” where humans wanted civilization to collapse because ...

Interstellar notes

I thought interstellar was an amazing movie and made me rethink the concept of time as a whole. I like how all of the little clues throughout the movie all made sense in the end and was able to come full circle. For our interstellar inspired time travel video we decided to make a video traveling to the past to warn citizens of Earth to take actions and listen to medical professions when the Neuroencephalo virus arises. This broadcast of us will be streamed to citizens technology like iPhone, computers and Tvs. We thought this was an important concept because it explains how stubborn people were with COVID and even if a new deadly virus was to arise tomorrow people still wouldn't listen or follow medical advice which could ultimately lead to half the population being wiped out. This relates to my major wanting to be a health care professional. There is only so much healthcare professionals can do for people when they dont want to listen or take diseases serious...
